A talented person should be able to do the job he or she wants to do and is best suited for. Unfortunately, that is not often the case. Most creative people end up doing jobs that are far from their area of expertise. Ajith Kumar Kannan, CEO and founder of pxljobs.com, talks from his own experience. Having started his career as an animator, he tried his hand as a story board artist, graphic designer, web designer, UI/UX designer and creative director and so on before launching his own entrepreneurial venture.
pxljobs.com is a portfolio-driven hiring platform exclusively for creative jobs, which acts as a meeting point for recruiters and prospective candidates. “There are so many creative people looking for jobs and many avenues for them to excel, but they are not aware of these opportunities. Through pxljobs.com, we are building a platform for jobs in the creative space,” says Kannan.
The site is easy to navigate and use. Signing up as a candidate, one can showcase one’s skills. Recruiters could see the portfolio and pick the person for the job. “We also provide a profile verification mechanism (machine and human), which will cut down 50% of the recruiters’ job,” says Kannan. From a recruiter’s point of view, the site makes the process of finding the right talent easier. It will soon launch a map-based mechanism to identify freelancers in a location nearby.
Candidates can also share portfolios with multiple stakeholders as a shareable digital resume/profile page with custom URL is created for each candidate. A social media presence is also ensured as the site is integrated with most of the social media platforms.
Promoted by Kannan’s Bangalore-based company ThoughtGrid Interactive, pxljobs.com has already crossed 30,000 candidate registrations while the number of registered employers is more than 4,500. As of now, pxljobs is a team of 20 people. “The challenges are many and we are working on refining our system,” Kannan says.
Within a year of its launch, the site has visitors looking out for creative work over 150 categories, a few of which are web and mobile designers, UI/UX designers, graphic designers, game designers, animators, photographers, fashion designers, CAD designers, print designers, texture artists, creative directors, content writers, product designers, video editors, illustrators, and storyboard artists.
And among the recruiters are gaming companies, advertising and technology companies, web development companies to start with. “The market is enormous and we are constantly improving our system to include other services as well, such as connecting with institutes,” Kannan says.
It is all about helping a candidate find a job that he or she loves. “The focus was on creating a website that was high on functionality, usability and one that could change the way creative talent hiring is happening now,” Kannan signs off.
